Iron ore is used in cement factories as a source of iron (Fe₂O₃), which plays a crucial role in the production of clinker, the main component of cement. Here are the key uses of iron ore in a cement plant:

  • Corrective Material:
Iron ore helps balance the raw mix composition by providing iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), which is essential for clinker formation.
  • Fluxing Agent:
It lowers the clinker melting temperature, reducing energy consumption and improving the efficiency of the kiln.
  • Strength and Color:
Proper Fe₂O₃ content enhances the strength of cement and contributes to its gray color.
  • Formation of Key Compounds:
Helps in the formation of tricalcium aluminoferrite (C₄AF), which affects the setting time and durability of cement.
Iron ore is typically added in small amounts, along with limestone, clay, and other materials, to achieve the desired chemical composition in cement production.
